Is Family Medicine Right for Me?

An approach for the whole family with a focus on care through all life's stages

  • Patients: The entire family – from babies to patients in their 90s.
  • Focus: Family medicine specialists focus on developing long-term patient relationships with involvement in health care through all phases of life, and an understanding each patient’s overall health history. Family medicine can be a great choice for parents needing to schedule multiple family appointments for the same day. They often have a focus on general wellness and prevention of disease.
  • Training: Family Medicine training focuses giving physicians a complete look at all the different kinds of patient needs, as well as training to better understand the needs of children and women, including pregnancy, labor, and delivery.

Is Internal Medicine Right for Me?

A multi-system approach with a special focus on complex adult diseases

  • Patients: 18 years and older
  • Focus: Internists provide a full range of primary care, from prevention to treatment of complex adult diseases such as hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, and high cholesterol. They take a multi-system approach to treating the whole person, sometimes in coordination with other specialists. Their extra training makes them an ideal choice for adults with unique health concerns or conditions requiring specialized care, or patients with multiple uncontrolled medical problems.
  • Training: Residency training includes hospital services as staff physician, caring for outpatients. They also receive critical care training, and rotations in specialties like cardiology, endocrinology, and gastroenterology.
