Brugada (brew-GAH-dah) syndrome is a genetic heart rhythm disorder characterized by abnormal electrocardiogram (ECG) findings and an increased risk of sudden cardiac death. People with Brugada syndrome have an increased risk of abnormal heart rhythms from the lower chambers of the heart (ventricular arrhythmias). Brugada syndrome occurs more frequently in men.
Symptoms
People with Brugada syndrome often don’t have symptoms, and may not know they have the condition. The most common sign of the disorder is the presence of a Type 1 Brugada ECG pattern as detected by electrocardiogram (ECG) test. The following symptoms could also indicate Brugada syndrome. However they may also point to other ailments, so it’s important to be tested by a physician who is knowledgeable in heart rhythm disorders.
- Fainting (syncope)
- Irregular or chaotic heartbeats
- Extremely fast and chaotic heartbeat (sudden cardiac arrest)
Treatment
Treatment options may include one or a combination of the following:
- Avoiding certain medications that aggravate the condition
- Reducing fever
- Using an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) which uses an electrical charge to keep your heart beating properly
