An insertable cardiac monitor is a small device that continuously records your heart rhythms over long periods. Smaller than a key, the ICM is inserted just beneath the skin in your upper chest area through a minimally invasive procedure. An ICM can be a useful diagnostic tool if you have arrythmia symptoms regularly, but not often enough to be captured by an external monitor. Your doctor can access and download information from the monitor, to determine if the following symptoms are caused by a heart-related problem:
- Syncope (fainting)
- Seizures
- Recurrent palpitations
- Lightheadedness
- Dizziness
Once your heart's activity has been recorded during your symptoms and your cardiologist is satisfied that any heart-related causes are identified or ruled out, the device will be removed.
